Rockford-based Merrell, an outdoor performance brand, today announced the launch of a new hiker boot, Thermo Rogue. The boot utilizes PrimaLoft insulation technology and features the Arctic Grip Dura outsole in partnership with Vibram.
The new boot is an athletic two-season hybrid and features PrimaLoft Gold Insulation Aerogel. Even when compressed, the ultra-lightweight technology of the boot maintains its insulated properties. A specially designed outsole, the Vibram Arctic Grip Dura, helps the wearer to maintain traction in winter conditions.
“We’re continuing to see a merge happening in the trail running and mountaineering arenas,” says Steve Workman, Merrell vice president of hike. “More and more athletes are attacking fast climbs and runs on the trail. We’re seeing a growth of experience-based runs that feature huge elevation changes and technical terrain.
“We knew we had to meet the challenge of creating the perfect winter boot to meet these conditions — one that significantly cuts back on excess bulk, while still offering premium protection for harsh weather environments. Its unique versatility makes it suitable for any winter hike.”
The boot made its initial debut at the Outdoor Retailer Winter show 2018 last week and was awarded Gear Junkie’s 2018 Best in Show Award. Additionally, it was showcased in Backpacker Magazine’s Gear of OR 2018 highlight, as well as won the 2018 ISPO Gold Award in the Winter Boots category.
The new boots will be field tested this March by Merrell endurance athletes Mike Chambers and Jason Antin on Greenland’s Arctic Circle Trail. The Thermo Rogue will be available for purchase in Winter 2018.
Merrell is a division of Wolverine World Wide, a large footwear company that also has such brands as Hush Puppies, Wolverine boots, and Sperry Top-Sider. The corporation, founded 1883, has its headquarters in Rockford, just north of Grand Rapids.
