Sunlogics, Inc. Brings Global Headquarters to Michigan

Solar power manufacturer brings 200 jobs and $30 Million investment to Oakland County as part of Oakland County’s Emerging Sectors initiative

WATERFORD – Sunlogics Inc., the newest success in Oakland County’s Emerging Sectors business attraction and retention strategy, today announced the opening of its global headquarters and manufacturing facility in Rochester Hills.

Sunlogics is a solar panel manufacturer and development company selected by General Motors Ventures to provide solar-powered electric charging stations for the Chevrolet Volt at 3,000 Chevrolet dealerships in North America. Sunlogics is opening its operation in a 140,000 square foot building that was once owned by the Dana Corp.

Sunlogics said it will invest $30 million in the Rochester Hills facility and create 200 jobs. The company considered competing sites in Ohio and Illinois before deciding to locate in Oakland County. The company projected the annual economic impact of the facility to be $90 million.

“The GM Ventures investment clearly demonstrates that technology and innovation continue to thrive in Oakland County,” County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said. “We appreciate GM Ventures’ significant commitment to Sunlogics and Sunlogics’ decision to locate its headquarters in Rochester Hills and Oakland County.”

GM Ventures also announced it had made an equity investment of $7.5 million in Sunlogics. The energy company will use some of the funding to set up the Rochester Hills headquarters.

GM Ventures is a subsidiary of the auto company designed to help identify and develop innovative technologies in the automotive/transportation sector.

Oakland County provided Sunlogics with site search assistance, community introductions, work force recruitment and training, introductions to suppliers, customers and partners and free space in the Automation Alley International Business Center.

Oakland County’s Emerging Sectors® business attraction strategy was created in 2004 by Patterson to target high-tech businesses to help diversify the economy and offset manufacturing losses. Target areas include advanced electronics and control systems, advanced materials and chemicals, alternative energy and power generation, communication and information technology, defense and homeland security, film and digital media, finance and other fast growth sectors and Oakland County Michigan’s Medical Main Street – biotechnology, health care & medical research and medical devices & instrumentation.

Since its inception, the 186 Emerging Sectors companies have brought investment of $1.7 billion, created or retained more than 35,000 jobs and generated taxes of $43 million.
