GEKOT Robotics, founded in 2020 by Dan Champoux in Bloomfield Township, has developed an add-on suite of sensors and controls to improve eScooters often found in large city centers and on college campuses for use as transportation on demand.
The electronics are designed to mitigate accidents and injuries, vehicle abuse and battery theft, as well as encourage adherence to safety rules among riders.
“Our premier solution is a patented active safety module,” says Champoux. “Sensors are used to detect potential hazards similar to collision avoidance systems found in modern cars.”
Many cities are now requiring that fleet owners demonstrate how they are addressing accident, vehicle abuse and battery theft concerns before receiving an operating permit. A typical market can net $100,000 annually “so they actively seek technology like ours,” Champoux says.
Once integrated into a light electric vehicle, GEKOT’s technology monitors for undesirable events and performs appropriate alerts as required. It mitigates these concerns through alarms/alerts, real-time notifications to fleet managers, and by limiting vehicle speed.
