The mission of Make Food Not Waste, founded in 2017 at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church in downtown Detroit, is to keep food out of landfills by creating lasting solutions to food waste through education, food upcycling, and advocacy. In 2025, the organization kept more than 100,000 pounds of food out of the landfill and turned it into 120,000 nutritious meals for people facing food insecurity. It also started the city of Southfield’s food scrap drop off program, and created the MI 2030 Food Waste Coalition in 2025.
