Founded as Leukemia, Research, Life (LRL) in 1981 and renamed Kids Without Cancer in 2011, this organization raises money to fund the pediatric cancer research being conducted at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and its affiliates Wayne State University and the Karmanos Cancer Institute. It was founded by a small group of parents who had children in cancer treatment at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. At that time only about 50 percent of kids diagnosed with cancer would survive. Thanks to research the survival rates for many childhood cancers have improved dramatically. Today the average survival rate is nearly 80 percent.
