The Herrick Foundation in Detroit was founded in 1949 by Ray W. Herrick, a skilled tradesman who founded a shop that later became Tecumseh Products Co., an early Fortune 500 company. Today, the foundation supports the furthering education and research within organizations that share a commitment to social welfare. The foundation, which has donated more than $450 million to charitable organizations, focuses its giving in Michigan and makes many grants anonymously to allow the community to take ownership over the initiative the foundation is supporting. Current focus areas for the foundation include pandemic emergency relief, community-building efforts, and educational initiatives. The organization is currently accepting applications for grants.
