When Michigan Central Station reopened on June 6, 2024, it marked one of Detroit’s most anticipated moments in decades. The restoration of this architectural landmark captured national attention, and while the large-scale public concert outside drew crowds from across the city, a remarkable celebration was also unfolding inside — a VIP event where Display Group’s expertise helped create an atmosphere as unforgettable as the station itself.

Planning for this milestone began a full year earlier, in the summer of 2023, when Michigan Central engaged local companies to help execute the grand opening. By that time, Display Group had already been working closely with the station’s team on logistics, layouts, and production concepts. The mission was clear: to welcome people back to the station for the first time in decades with a celebration unlike anything Detroit had seen before, and to bring that vision to life in a way that matched the building’s significance.

The VIP event was a masterclass in combining elegance with technical precision. Guests were greeted by aerialists pouring champagne, dramatic lighting, and décor intentionally chosen to enhance — rather than overshadow — the grandeur of the restored concourse. Display Group provided full audiovisual services, ensuring that every moment, from speeches to live entertainment, was delivered with crystal-clear sound and impeccable visuals. Every lighting cue and sound mix was tailored to the station’s unique acoustics and scale.

Beyond AV, Display Group’s contributions touched nearly every element of the evening. Eighty-five percent of the event’s components came directly from the company’s in-house inventory — including sophisticated lounge furniture, specialty bars, staging, lighting fixtures, and food-and-beverage rentals. This all-under-one-roof capability allowed the team to maintain design consistency, streamline production, and react quickly to any last-minute needs.

The VIP evening also served as a preview for the exhibits and activations that would be open to the public during the Michigan Central OPEN House from June 7–16. Attendees explored immersive installations like The MC Cube, a 15-foot LED art piece, as well as portrait galleries, interactive history walls, and a striking AI-driven light sculpture.

Outside, Display Group kept the momentum going by managing a rotating lineup of local food trucks and providing furniture and AV support for public programming. Live music performances, community talks, and welcoming outdoor lounge spaces helped create a festival-like atmosphere that drew thousands to the station over the ten-day celebration.

Producing an event of this scale required a seamless blend of creativity, logistics, and technical expertise. Display Group’s team developed floor plans, coordinated vendor timelines, and adapted quickly to evolving schedules. With AV, staging, décor, and rentals all handled in-house, the company ensured that every transition — whether between speakers, performances, or space resets — felt natural and uninterrupted to guests.

The reopening of Michigan Central Station was more than a high-profile project. It was a civic milestone, a symbol of Detroit’s resurgence, and a chance for Display Group to showcase the full scope of what it can deliver. The team’s role went far beyond event setup — it was about crafting an experience that honored the past, celebrated the present, and hinted at the city’s future.

As Detroit entered this new chapter, Display Group was proud to be part of the story, working behind the scenes to ensure every detail reflected the importance of the occasion. From the first planning meeting to the final guest departure, the goal was the same: to create a celebration worthy of the station’s return — and one that will be remembered for years to come.
