Every January, as temperatures drop and Detroit settles into the deepest stretch of winter, something kind and generous happens. Hundreds of Detroiters step out of the cold and into a night filled with warmth, music, art, and a sense of purpose. They gather for Soup City, COTS’ signature event that brings together community, compassion, and celebration, all while raising vital support for families experiencing homelessness.
Soup City is much more than a fundraiser. It is a 27-year-old COTS tradition and a reminder of the power of community. In a city known for resilience, creativity, and grit, Soup City becomes a moment when people across neighborhoods, workplaces, and backgrounds come together to say: We see the need. We hear the stories. And we are willing to act.
For families, winter is often the most brutal stretch of the year. The cold months amplify every challenge: unstable housing, reduced resources, and the extreme vulnerability that comes with navigating a crisis in freezing temperatures. Soup City exists because our community refuses to look away. Every connection made that night helps ensure that hope and opportunity stay alive for families living with limited means.
But what makes Soup City truly unforgettable is the storytelling.

Guests hear testimonies of triumph and healing and come to understand that every story is made possible through partnership, collaboration, and community investment. Families share how they participated in various life-changing programs within the shelter and built lasting relationships with their coaches and mentors on their journey to stable housing. Parents speak about completing job training programs, securing new employment, or returning to school. Children talk about achieving milestones they once thought were out of reach. And behind every story is a network of people—coaches, donors, volunteers, and partners—who believed in what was possible.
These stories are the heartbeat of Soup City.
They remind us all that homelessness is not an identity—it’s a moment. And with the right support, that moment can become the catalyst for a new chapter.
Presented by Lineage Foundation for Good, this year’s event continues that spirit in bold, Detroit-centered fashion. Soup City: The Detroit Edition invites guests to represent the city in the way that excites them. Whether that’s wearing your favorite Lion’s, Tiger’s, Piston’s, or Red Wings’ apparel, dressed as a Motown icon, or even representing your favorite Detroit enterprise, this event reflects the best of Detroit: creative, soulful, vibrant, and unwavering.
Guests will enjoy delicious soups and small plates from some of the city’s favorite restaurants, live entertainment across two floors, a vibrant silent auction, and the energy of hundreds of people united for a cause. Partnership and collaboration are woven into every detail of Soup City. Sponsors, chefs, businesses, volunteers, and community members rally together—not because they have to, but because Detroit’s strength has always come from its people choosing to lift one another up.

As we look ahead to another Detroit winter, one thing is clear: our collective action matters. Participation, whether through attending, sponsoring, bidding, or spreading the word, creates real, measurable impact for families rebuilding their lives.
