Sit Sense, founded in 2025 in East Lansing, develops technology that lessens pressure injuries, also known as bedsores, by automatically identifying high-pressure regions on the body and repositioning patients accordingly.
These injuries occur when a part of a body, especially around a bony prominence (areas like the buttocks, lower back, and upper back), experience excessive pressure over a prolonged period. They affect approximately 2.5 million U.S. patients annually, causing more than 60,000 deaths and costing hospitals up to $26.8 billion.
The Sit Sense is an automated medical recliner that follows a proprietary repositioning protocol, using five articulating supports to optimize patient positioning. The co-founders’ research has shown that the unique positions in the protocol offload areas experiencing large pressures and restore blood flow to areas that were previously blocked.
“Sit Sense is changing the standard of care for pressure sore prevention,” says Justin Scott, co-founder of Sit Sense. “It has integrated the first smart, gentle, and automatic patient repositioning system into a recliner to reduce the risk of pressure sores, reduce health care costs, and ease staff workload.”
A patent has been issued and the prototype has successfully been demonstrated at multiple hospitals in southeast Michigan.
