Modal Motors in Farmington Hills was spun off from Veolectra Inc., a product development company, also in Farmington Hills, in 2024 to commercialize its patent-pending advanced electric motor technology that can be produced using no rare-earth material.

“Our patent-pending electric motor technology is unique and harvests all of the magnetic flux developed inside the electric motor, enabling us to achieve the highest torque density and average efficiency direct drive motor on the market,” says Michael Van Steenburg, co-founder and CEO of Modal Motors.

“Our motors will have the highest full speed range efficiency due to the fact that our motors do not require back irons for the magnets and are yokeless, which are the source of the highest losses for our competitors’ electric motors. Our motors can even be made without permanent magnets and can utilize aluminum coil windings instead of copper.”

Modal Motors are designed to be manufactured in the U.S. with low capital costs and low- to no-touch labor making them a cost-effective solution for customers in the mobility market. The modular architecture also enables fully automated cell-based manufacturing that is scalable as volumes and motor sizes increase, the company says.
