Mitovation in Ann Arbor, founded in 2017 by Maik Hüttemann and Thomas Sanderson, is developing novel infrared light (IRL) technology for the treatment of ischemic brain injuries.

With funding and support from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense, Mitovation’s hopes to see its technology go from bench to bedside for the treatment of cardiac arrest, traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke, and neonatal hypoxia.

“Mitovation’s technology is currently being investigated in large animal studies funded by the NIH and DOD,” says Sanderson. “Studies to date have shown Mitovation’s infrared light therapy protects neurological function of animals that suffer from neonatal hypoxia/ischemia and cardiac arrest with subsequent resuscitation.”

The founders say they have received grant funding to pursue certain applications for the technology, including spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury.

Mitovation says it’s currently focused on confirming previous findings with ongoing grant support from the NIH and others, designing a human interface for its medical device, and preparing for first-in-human clinical trials in pursuit of FDA approval.

“We believe our technology is poised to change the standard of care for those who suffer from ischemia-reperfusion injuries of the brain,” says Hüttemann.

Mitovation has an exclusive license to its infrared technology through Wayne State University’s Office of Technology Commercialization in Detroit and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
