Lux & Layered is a premium clean-label cake mix company founded in 2025 in Bloomfield Hills by Medina Sandler.
“After 30 years as a scratch baker, I saw a gap in the cake-mix market,” says Sandler. “The established brands that dominate the category often rely on highly processed ingredients and artificial enhancements, while consumers are frequently left adding ingredients of their own to make a boxed cake taste homemade.
Gluten-free products fill an important need, she says, but many don’t provide the structure and stability needed for layered cakes.
“I saw an opportunity for something different — a cake mix made with traditional, recognizable ingredients that could be layered, handled beautifully, and tastes phenomenal.”
Sandler enlisted the help of Rising Stars Academy in Center Line for packaging her product. Rising Stars creates employment opportunities and develops job skills for individuals who have historically faced significant barriers to employment. What began as a practical business need has become a partnership that aligned with the values behind Lux & Layered, she says.
“I started Lux & Layered because I believed people deserved better,” Sandler says. “Within just a few weeks, we’ve established a rapidly growing retail presence throughout southeast Michigan, with our premium cake mixes now on shelves in specialty and gourmet grocery stores across the region.
Sandler has exhibited at a national buyers’ food show and now is in discussions with larger food chains outside of Michigan. She’s also undergoing a vetting process with a national retailer.
“What began as a Michigan-born vision is quickly gaining momentum beyond the state,” Sandler says.
