Eye Care for Detroit Inc., a sister company to American Advantage Home Care Inc., was founded in 2022 by Cleamon Moorer Jr. to provide access to high-quality and affordable eye care for Detroit’s approximately 40,000 homebound community and underserved populations.
“There is a large homebound community in Detroit and vision care is one of the biggest gaps in their health care,” says Moorer who adds that Detroit’s population is at greater risk of avoidable, treatable eye diseases and blindness due to the lack of access to affordable and accessible eye care services, awareness of eye health needs, costs, and transportation barriers.
To help change the paradigm, Eye Care for Detroit provides:
- Telehealth through an online platform through which individuals and families can reach out to participating optometrists and primary care physicians to schedule eye appointments.
- Mobile eye care clinic units that are equipped to enable participating optometrists and ophthalmologists to perform routine exams and services at a patient’s residence.
- In-home visits using state-of-the-art portable ophthalmologic devices and equipment.
- Transportation services for eligible patients.
- Prescription fulfillment via a partnership with eyeglassescom.
“We’ve been able to help some folks, but not enough,” Moorer says. “We’d like to get more of the philanthropic community involved.”
