OneSix Energy Inc. was founded in Detroit in 2024 by Dan Darga and Stefan Sysko to develop a cleaner and less expensive way to convert methane into hydrogen fuel and clean carbon.
The company says the current market for hydrogen and carbon forces consumers to choose between “inexpensive, but dirty” or “clean, but expensive.”
“We believe that OneSix Energy’s low-cost, clean hydrogen production method is the right solution at the right time,” says Sysko, co-founder and CEO of OneSix. “Companies around the world have told us they want to switch over to clean hydrogen, but they can only do it if the economics make sense. We can help them with that.”
Here’s how it works: OneSix’s proprietary methane pyrolysis technology (using extremely high heat to hasten decomposition) doesn’t utilize external energy to pyrolyze the methane, consumes no water, is modular and scalable, and allows for production of hydrogen onsite where it’s used, eliminating the cost of transporting hydrogen.
Rather than producing carbon that must be discarded, OneSix Energy’s approach produces pure carbon that can be upcycled as needed for use as a filler in concrete and asphalt, activated carbon in water filtration systems, additives to make rubber more durable, pigment in ink and plastics, graphite for batteries, as well as a whole range of uses in the form of graphene and carbon nanotubes
