Michigan Capital Network in Grand Rapids was a lead investor in a $6.5 million in Series A financing for Poppy, a growing wedding florist company based in Virginia. Poppy is a company in the MCN portfolio of investments,
The round was completed with the participation by IDEA Fund Partners in North Carolina, Techstars in Colorado, Angeles Investors in Chicago, Riptide Ventures in Baltimore, and Front Porch Ventures in North Carolina.
Poppy’s booking and fulfillment platform for wedding flowers, the first of its kind in the wedding and floral industries, will form the basis on which the next evolution of its product is developed.
The wedding flower industry is a $5 billion opportunity and since inception, Poppy has built a digital platform that creates a more transparent experience for couples, florists, and farmers in a way that has not been done before in the floral and wedding industries.
Since its founding in 2019, Poppy has been the wedding florist selected by more than 3,000 weddings over 52 U.S. cities. Poppy’s digital platform can instantly build customized wedding floral proposals for couples, complete with images of real Poppy floral designs and on-demand pricing.
Coupled with their in-house team of floral consultants, coordinators, and designers, their digital platform makes the fulfillment and installation of wedding flowers seamless. In addition to their technology, Poppy’s competitive advantages include a deep farm-direct supply chain and the first-of-its-kind Poppy “Floral Designer Network.”
Poppy has grown its network organically to more than 600 floral designers, who choose to work with Poppy because they love the ease and efficiency of the platform. Poppy targets customers spending $1,500 to $5,000 — generating higher gross margins per order than a traditional florist because of the company’s supply chain and technology platform.
As a result of its business model, Poppy opens access to high quality design and flowers for thousands of customers who were previously priced out of top tier wedding flowers. The Series A fundraiser follows Poppy’s $2 million in seed funding from December 2020.
This new round of financing will enable the company to continue to invest in its product experience for couples buying their wedding flowers and growing its marketing and executive teams in the next year.
In the coming months, Poppy will expand to more states and continue investing in its major markets of New York, D.C. Maryland, Virginia, California, and Texas.
“Poppy has an innovative business model that transforms the process of buying wedding flowers into a seamless digital experience,” says Meagan Malm, principal, Michigan Capital Network. “This approach delivers a tangible competitive advantage in the mostly offline wedding flower industry. We’re constantly looking for entrepreneurs who change the market paradigm and better serve their customers.”
