The Troy-based Ted Lindsay Foundation was founded in 2001, and named in honor of the late Detroit Red Wings Hockey Hall of Fame player and coach, to positively impact the quality of life for individuals with autism and their families. It is focused on elevating public awareness about the need for increased funding and support for individuals with autism. The organization provides financial support for intervention, educational programs, and social services for children and young adults with autism. Its annual Courage Award honors two individuals or families facing life with autism with courage and perseverance. It also supports new and existing research projects investigating possible causes of autism to improve understanding of the condition.
