Trinity Health Ann Arbor has announced plans a multi-phased, three-year, $60.5 million renovation and expansion of its Emergency Department. Construction of the new space is expected to be completed in late 2028.

The project include the renovation of the existing Emergency Department and an adjacent dialysis area, which together span 44,600 square feet, along with a 13,100-square-foot expansion to better meet the growing needs of Washtenaw County and surrounding communities.

Work is scheduled to begin this month. Trinity Health Ann Arbor, a Level 1 Trauma Center, will remain fully operational throughout the construction process.

“Our hospital is committed to responding to the voices of our patients, colleagues ,and the communities we serve,” says Alonzo T. Lewis, president of Trinity Health Ann Arbor, Livingston, Oakland, and Livonia. “Recently, that feedback has been clear — upgrade our Emergency Department to ensure an appropriate care environment to match the increasing complexity and evolving needs of those that entrust us with their care.”

Key project goals include:

— Capacity Expansion: The renovation and addition will increase the Emergency Department’s capacity, increasing the number of private rooms and stretcher bays to eliminate hallway chairs and stretchers, providing the appropriate patient care setting. In this way, the project will directly tackle overcrowding issues, creating a safe, private, healing environment for both patients and health care providers.

— Enhanced Patient and Family Experience: The design will incorporate improved spaces for family members, ensuring greater comfort and accessibility.

— Support for Staff and Clinical Operations: Additional staff areas will be integrated into the design, promoting a more efficient workflow, better resource allocation, and enhanced safety for colleagues.

— State-of-the-Art Facilities: The ED will feature flexible spaces equipped with advanced technology, ensuring it meets the highest standards of emergency care today and in the future. An additional CT scanner will also offer timely imaging directly in the Emergency Department.

The design development phase, which is now complete, involved several collaborative meetings, as well as the engagement of hospital staff from several different disciplines.

The new plan follows the 2024 announcement of a new $48 million Emergency Department at Trinity Health Oakland’s campus along Woodward Avenue in downtown Pontiac — the two projects reflect a unified strategy to elevate emergency care in southeast Michigan.

The enhancements are designed to accommodate increasing patient volumes and the rising complexity of care, while also creating a more supportive space for caregivers.

“Everyone in our community depends on a strong Emergency Department, one that delivers timely, high-quality care in a setting designed for today’s health care realities,” says Dr. David Vandenberg, chief medical officer of Trinity Health Ann Arbor and Trinity Health Livingston.

The Emergency Department at Trinity Health Ann Arbor construction project is being funded through designated capital investment dollars from both Trinity Health’s national system office and Trinity Health Ann Arbor, along with donor support.
