The Detroit Red Wings will offer free street hockey clinics for youths around the state beginning in July, in Meijer parking lots in cities such as Ann Arbor, Allen Park, and Lansing, among others.
“The Red Wings have never really had a signature event in the summer,” says Jim Biewer, director of event marketing and game presentation for the Detroit Red Wings. “It’s been my goal to get something going for the summer, to keep hockey alive during the summertime. We haven’t really touched street hockey as an organization in awhile.”
The Street Hockey Summer Tour is designed for children ages 7 through 12, and will feature a morning and afternoon session at 10 stops. Biewer says the clinics are designed for both children who have no hockey experience and those who want to keep their skills up during the summer.
The first hour of each session will feature a one-hour clinic, followed by a 30-minute pick-up street hockey game. The clinics will be instructed by Detroit Red Wings representatives, along with local hockey players and coaches. There are 60 spots for each session.
Biewer says there will also be games and giveaways at each location for those not participating in the hockey clinic.
