The Bell Tower, a new housing project near downtown Milford, includes the redevelopment of the former historic St. Mary’s of the Snows Church, built in 1903, into condominiums, along with five new single-family townhomes built across the street. Units will go on sale at the end of the month.
The project was developed by Steve Varilone of Bell Tower LLC, and includes six condominiums — two garden level and four street level units — inside the fieldstone church, each ranging from 1,280 square feet to 1,525 square-feet, as well as the single-family townhomes, all slightly more than 2,000 square feet. The former church is located at 219 E. Commerce St., two blocks away from Milford’s downtown district.
He says the church’s bell tower was converted into a two-story community space. It’s accessible by a spiral staircase only to the owners of the six units in the former church, “to do everything from drinking a glass of wine, to watching a sunrise or sunset, or watching a parade in downtown Milford,” Varilone says.
He says the design of the corresponding townhomes’ façade was kept in line with the historic architecture of the former church. Each townhome features an attached two-car garage, two or three bedrooms, and a full basement. There is also additional guest parking along the east property line of the units. Prices of the townhomes have not been determined.
The property was acquired and renamed Bell Towner Condominiums in 2014, with renovations starting in 2015. Various businesses have used the building after it’s vacancy in 1967, including a hypnotist and a physical therapist.
“There truly is not a project in the state of Michigan, maybe in the Midwest, that is similar, in terms of preserving a 113-year-old stone structure,” Varilone says.
