Michigan Auto Law in Farmington Hills , the state’s largest law firm specializing exclusively in auto accident cases, has released its annual list identifying the Top 20 Most Dangerous Intersections in Michigan.
The latest annual report is part of Michigan Auto Law’s ongoing public safety initiatives to help Michigan drivers better understand where crashes occur most frequently and encourage motorists to exercise additional caution when traveling through high-risk areas.
Each year, the car accident lawyers at Michigan Auto Law collect and analyze official crash data from the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reporting Unit, which compiles vehicle accident reports filed by local law enforcement and police departments throughout Michigan.
The 2025 findings represent the most current and comprehensive data available for total crashes occurring at or near intersections across the state.
For purposes of the report, an “intersection” is defined as a roadway controlled by traffic signals, four-way stop signs, or roundabouts. The analysis includes reported traffic crashes that occurred within 200 feet of an intersection, including those near freeways and their on-ramps, off-ramps, and service roads, as well as divided highways and rural roads.
The crash data encompasses any traffic accident reported including those resulting in injuries and/or fatalities or resulting in property damage.
Based on years of research on Michigan intersection accidents, intersections with heavy traffic, freeway access points, and major retail or commercial areas have consistently ranked among Michigan’s most crash-prone locations. Every year, nearly one-third of all car crashes in Michigan, and approximately 30 percent of all fatal car crashes, occur at intersections.
In Michigan, the leading causes of intersection accidents include running red lights, disregarding stop and yield signs, failing to yield the right-of-way, disregarding the right-of-way laws, improper left hand turns, speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.
Knowing which intersections experience the highest number of crashes also can help drivers make informed decisions about their routes and determine when it may be appropriate to take an alternative road or exercise additional caution.
“Even when a crash doesn’t result in an injury, it can have a significant impact on a driver and their family,” says Steve Gursten, president and Attorney at Michigan Auto Law. “We hope this annual list encourages Michigan drivers to slow down, remain alert, and take extra precautions when traveling through these areas.”
The Top 20 Most Crash-Prone “Dangerous” Intersections in Michigan include:
- 18 1/2 MILE ROAD @ VAN DYKE AVENUE, Sterling Heights, 210 Crashes, 12 Injuries (Roundabout)
The total number of crashes jumped 29.6 percent from 162 in 2024. Total crashes in previous years were: 2023 (135), 2022 (118), 2021 (168), 2020 (131), 2019 (229). The total number of injuries stayed the same as in 2024.
- 11 MILE ROAD/I 696 @ VAN DYKE AVENUE,Warren/Center Line, 180 Crashes, 1 Fatality, and 33 Injuries
The total number of crashes decreased by 2.7 percent from 185 crashes in 2024. Total crashes in previous years were: 2023 (218), 2022 (207), 2021 (173), 2020 (124), 2019 (129). Tragically there was 1 fatality in 2025, and the number of injuries increased by 26.9% from 26 in 2024.
- TELEGRAPH ROAD @ 12 MILE ROAD, Southfield, 121 Total Crashes, 28 Injuries
The total number of crashes increased 14.1 percent from 106 in 2024. Total crashes in previous years were: 2023 (99), 2022 (110), 2021 (95), 2020 (88), 2019 (128), 2018 (145). There was also a 21.7 percent increase in injuries from 23 in 2024.
- ORCHARD LAKE ROAD @ 14 MILE ROAD,Farmington Hills, 118 Total Crashes, 9 Injuries (Roundabout)
The total number of crashes increased 8.2 percent from 109 in 2024. Total crashes in previous years were: 2023 (132), 2021 (122), 2020 (89), 2019 (178), 2018 (144). The total number of injuries also increased from 5 in 2024.
- MARTIN PARKWAY @ N. PONTIAC TRAIL, Commerce Township., 107 Total Crashes, 9 Injuries (Roundabout)
This is Oakland County’s largest roundabout. The total number of crashes fell to 29.1 percent from 151 in 2024. Total crashes in previous years were: 2023 (160), 2022 (126), 2021 (140), 2020 (110), and 2019 (161) total crashes. The total number of injuries remained the same as in 2024.
- STATE ROAD @ W. ELLSWORTH ROAD,Ann Arbor, 93 Total Crashes, 5 Injuries (Roundabout)
The total number of crashes increased from 85 in 2024.
- 12 MILE ROAD @ I-94,St. Clair Shores, 86 Total Crashes, 21 Injuries
The total number of crashes increased from 75 crashes and 11 injuries in 2024.
- N. HAMILTON STREET @ WASHTENAW AVENUE,Ypsilanti, 85 Total Crashes, 8 Injuries
The total number of crashes decreased from 132 in 2024.
- SCHOOLCRAFT ROAD @ TELEGRAPH ROAD, Redford Township, 84 Total Crashes, 18 Injuries
The total number of crashes decreased from 137 crashes and 26 injuries in 2024.
- TELEGRAPH ROAD @ MAPLE ROAD, Bloomfield Township, 83 Total Crashes, 47 Injuries
This location is new to the top 20 ranking. The total number of crashes increased from 59, and the total number of injuries increased from 22 in 2024.
- LEE ROAD. @ WHITMORE LAKE ROAD.Green Oak Township, 82 Total Crashes, 2 Injuries (West Roundabout)
The total number of crashes increased from 80, but total injuries decreased from 3 in 2024.
- SOUTHFIELD ROAD @ W. 11 MILE ROAD,Lathrup Village, 81 Total Crashes, 23 Injuries
The total number of crashes increased from 76, but the total number of injuries decreased from 38 in 2024.
- US-131 @ WEALTHY STREET, Grand Rapids, 78 Total Crashes, 21 Injuries
The total number of crashes increased from 73, and the total number of injuries increased from 12 in 2024.
- HALL ROAD @ SCHOENHERR,Sterling Heights, 78 Total Crashes, 14 Injuries
The total number of crashes increased from 76, and the total number of injuries increased from 11 in 2024.
- METROPOLITAN PARKWAY @ VAN DYKE AVENUE, Sterling Heights, 77 Total Crashes, 21 Injuries
The total number of crashes increased from 54, and the total number of injuries decreased from 16 in 2024.
- BURTON STREET SW. @ US-131, Grand Rapids, 76 Total Crashes, 11 Injuries
The total number of crashes increased from 64, and the total number of injuries decreased from 17 in 2024.
- DIX AVENUE. @ M-39, Lincoln Park, 75 Total Crashes, 23 Injuries
The total number of crashes decreased from 68, and the total number of injuries increased from 22 in 2024.
- I-96 @ MILFORD ROAD., Lyon Township, 70 Total Crashes, 6 Injuries
The total number of crashes increased from 29, and the total number of injuries increased from 5 in 2024.
- 23 MILE ROAD. @ M-53, Shelby Township, 69 Total Crashes, 14 Injuries
The total number of crashes increased from 43, and the total number of injuries increased from 10 in 2024.
