When Greenfield Village in Dearborn reopens its gates for the 2024 season April 12 for members and April 13 for the public, several venue updates and reopened attractions await. A new restaurant — Stand 44 — opens May 1.

Stand 44, located next to the Detroit Central Market, is named for an actual stall in the market where celebrated local huckster Mary Judge sold her items along Cadillac Square from 1863 until the market was dismantled in 1894.

Stand 44 will be rooted in the past with an eye on a sustainable future, according to the restaurant’s website. The new restaurant will prepare food made from scratch by chefs and feature fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients that celebrate the Great Lakes grower community.

It will have multiple stations including those offering pizza, sandwiches, and salads as well as a rotating roster of guest chefs bringing their individual flair to the menu.

Stand 44 is designed to showcase sustainable food practices at every level, from the dishes and the dining experience to behind-the-scenes practices and the materials and systems that are a part of the LEED-certified building itself.

All the waste produced at Stand 44 will be composted for use in the village’s working farms and historic gardens.

This new dining venture also will be linked with The Henry Ford’s Edible Education programs, which has the goal of inspiring visitors to think about and act on issues concerning equitable food access, regenerative agriculture, and environmental stewardship.

In addition to Stand 44, Greenfield Village is unveiling the newly renovated and refreshed Greenfield Village Store. Guests can shop the quilting collection, new Detroit Central Market apparel, and products featuring artwork by illustrator and graphic designer Humberto Cruz. Visitors also can explore a selection of souvenirs, gifts, and handcrafted exclusives made in the village’s Liberty Craftworks.

Guests also will be able to explore the Detroit, Toledo, and Milwaukee Roundhouse, Dr. Howard’s Office, and the Grimm Jewelry Store for the first time since 2019.

Through May 20, Greenfield Village will be open to the public Tuesday-Sunday and starting May 21, the village will operate seven days a week.
