Jon and Katheryn Stoia have opened the North End Taproom at 111 S. Main Street in downtown Royal Oak, the first self-serve taproom in the area.

This style of taproom allows guests to try an array of different beers.

The couple’s effort to open the establishment started after moving back to Michigan from California during the pandemic. They missed California’s popular self-serve style breweries, which were illegal in Michigan at the time.

The Stoias started a campaign to change the law that included lobbying, testifying, and having discussions with politicians, state officials, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. As a result, Bill 0656 was passed and signed in late 2022.

The North End Taproom features 40 different taps of craft beers, seltzers, ciders, and wines. Additionally, a full-service kitchen will feature scratch menu items to complement beverage selections.

The menu includes fried harissa spiced chickpeas, meatballs, chili watermelon gazpacho, cauliflower chili walking taco, beer mussels, pan seared walleye tacos, Cubano cobb salad, BBQ chicken lettuce wraps, and more.

The Taproom is open Tuesday to Thursday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday from 4 p.m. to midnight; Saturday from noon to midnight, and Sundays from noon to 9 p.m.
