The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division has welcomed seven new officers to the organization.

Lt. Cols. Steven J. and Christine Merritt were appointed as the new leaders for The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division. Steven Merritt will serve as the divisional commander and regional CEO, overseeing officer development and the division’s finances, programs, youth candidates, social services, and development efforts. Christine Merritt will oversee the leadership of the divisional human resources department and serve as camp administrator for Echo Grove Camp and Retreat Center.

Prior to their current positions, the Merritts served The Salvation Army of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Both officers graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., where Steven Merritt earned his bachelor of science in practical ministries, and Christine Merritt earned her bachelor of arts in education. The Merritts bring more than 30 years of experience to their new roles.

Maj. Toni Dorrell has been appointed as the general secretary and metro Detroit area commander for The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division. In her role as metro Detroit area commander, she will oversee all fundraising, community development and social services in the metro Detroit area, and in her role as general secretary she will serve as regional COO and oversee the Great Lakes Division Harbor Light System.

Dorrell previously served as the general secretary and metro area commander in Kansas City. She earned her master of science in organizational and human resource development from Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, and her bachelor of science in business at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion. She has served The Salvation Army for more than 40 years.

Majs. Andrew and Melissa Shiels are new to the Great Lakes Division, with Andrew Shiels serving as the divisional secretary. His duties include overseeing divisional emergency disaster services and the property department. Melissa Shiels will serve as the first program secretary, overseeing the division’s programs and statistics.

Prior to their current positions, the Shiels served in Wisconsin. Andrew Shiels graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., where he received his bachelor of science in practical ministries. Melissa Shiels graduated from Concordia University in Mequon, Wisc., with a degree in paralegal studies. The Shiels have devoted 19 years to serving The Salvation Army.

Capt. Dalvius King-Harvy and Lt. Johnathan Harvy are the new corps officers at The Salvation Army Detroit Conner Creek Corps Center. Together, they will oversee social services, community outreach, youth services and community ministry across the city’s east side.

Before coming to Detroit, the two served in Chicago. Harvy received his bachelor of science in social transformation and psychology from the Jamaica Theological School of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, and his master of art in pastoral leadership from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. King-Harvy currently is working toward completing her practical ministry degree at Olivet Nazarene University. Both have served The Salvation Army for more than a decade.
