Ascension St. Mary’s Foundation revealed Dr. Samuel J. Shaheen is the 2023 recipient of the Spirit of St. Vincent Award, presented annually to a physician who has rendered long and noteworthy service to the Great Lakes Bay community.
Shaheen will be celebrated at the 29th Annual Cornette Ball on Saturday, Nov. 18, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The gala will be at Horizons Conference Center, 6200 State Street, in Saginaw.
Shaheen serves as president and chief executive officer of Central Michigan University (CMU) Medical Education Partners, based in Saginaw. CMU Medical Education Partners is an organization that involves a collaboration between CMU and Saginaw’s two hospitals – Ascension St. Mary’s and Covenant HealthCare.
He also serves as professor and interim chair surgical discipline, CMU College of Medicine. In addition, Shaheen is president of Shaheen Development, a family-owned, community-based real estate development company that operates throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region by creating places for living, working, leisure, and health care.
“Dr. Shaheen is very deserving of the Spirit of St. Vincent Award,” says Dr. Stephanie Duggan, regional president and CEO, North Region, Ascension Michigan. “Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital has a legacy of being a center of excellence for healthcare, and Dr. Shaheen has contributed to that, both as a surgeon and an administrator. The dedication and compassion he has for people and our communities is nothing short of exceptional.”
The Cornette Ball includes a cocktail hour, five-course gourmet meal, silent auction, and live music by Detroit’s Intrigue.
