Detroit Public Safety Foundation Executive Director Patti Kukula will receive the Dr. Ossian H. Sweet Foundation’s 2026 Gladys Sweet Humanitarian of the Year Award on Sept. 12.
Through Kukula’s leadership, the foundation has championed Detroit’s first responders, strengthened public safety, invested in young people, secured critical resources, and built partnerships that make the city of Detroit stronger.
The public is invited to the 8th Annual Dr. Ossian H. Sweet Foundation Open House on Saturday, Sept. 12th from noon-4 p.m. at the historic Sweet House, 2905 Garland St. in Detroit for the celebration and presentation of the award.
The award is named after Gladys Sweet, who stood beside her husband, Dr. Ossian Sweet, during one of the most consequential civil-rights battles of the 20th century. Working with the NAACP, she traveled to help raise funds for the legal defense of her husband and the nine others who stood with their family in defense of their home.
