Afterlife Restoration was founded in 2025 in Harbor Beach (on the shore of Lake Huron in Michigan’s thumb area) by Robert “Lee” Brown II to restore abandoned cemeteries.
“I restore everything from landscaping to headstones and monument repairs,” Brown says. “I help restore forgotten pioneer history and preserve family heritage. I am also looking to take ownership of these abandoned cemeteries and restore them as historical land markers and possibly reopen them to the public.”
Brown started cleaning military veteran headstones as community service following a DUI conviction in 2023.
“It made me motivated to start my own business,” he says. “I am not ashamed of my past, I embrace it. Cleaning vet’s headstones led to a passion of cemetery work over the past year and a half.”
Brown recently “stumbled across” an abandoned cemetery and currently is restoring it out of his own pocket.
Although there is interest in Afterlife Restoration restoring cemeteries in other towns around Michigan, Brown says they don’t have funding to restore their history.
“I want to restore our rich pioneer history before it’s too late and give these old historic cemeteries one last chance to tell their stories before being lost forever,” he says.
