Based in Auburn Hills, The Meemic Foundation was established in 1992 with the backing of Meemic Insurance Co., a business founded in 1950 by a group of Michigan teachers. The foundation started by granting college scholarships but has since shifted its focus to support educators with grants. The foundation has given millions of dollars in grant funding to more than 10,000 educators and their classes since that switch. In addition, the foundation supports public, private, parochial, and charter schools, as well as higher education institutions. The foundation also runs a club that is free to join and has special funding opportunities, a resource library, and other classroom resources. With the onset of the pandemic, the foundation began giving money to organizations such as the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and Feeding America West Michigan to ensure students can still have the meals they relied on at school without in-person learning.
