Services To Enhance Potential, or STEP, is based in Dearborn and provides support and services to nearly 1,300 people with disabilities and other mental health needs in Wayne County. One of the organization’s main goals is to increase the number of individuals with disabilities who are employed, self-employed, or volunteer in their communities. The organization’s supported employment services department offers employment placement, job development, job training, and job coaching services. Its training programs include a certified janitorial training program, retail training through its thrift store operations, and general business training designed to help individuals in a variety of work settings. STEP also works with local companies and organizations to set up paid internships for its clients. Companies such as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, DTE, Henry Ford Village, Staybridge Suites, Kroger, Comerica Park, and others help out by employing individuals with disabilities, offering job development activities such as mock interviews, and offering internships. The organization’s transition services help individuals make the switch from school to work after graduation.
