Created in 1998, MotorCities National Heritage Area in Detroit is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit affiliated with the National Park Service. Its mission is to preserve, interpret, and promote the region’s automotive and labor story. The organization serves 16 counties covering more than 10,000 square miles and representing a population of over 6.5 million. Efforts include developing partnerships that support the preservation and revitalization of auto heritage sites, neighborhoods, and communities. The group also packages and promotes automotive and labor heritage tours presented across the region to expand the heritage story and foster pride and economic development around these resources.
