The James E. Hunter Association is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Southfield that awards scholarships to local high school students. It also provides need-based educational grants for the local community through contributions and donations. Named in honor Hunter, a former Detroit Lions defensive back who played seven seasons (1976-82) for the team and a philanthropist, the association’s vision is to assist youth in obtaining educational excellence and cultivate them into responsible leaders for the community. It hosts an annual golf classic to raise funds for the organization. Hunter, along with fellow Lions players David Hill and Jimmy Allen, recorded in 1980 a remake of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” following the team’s string of victories to open the season.
