Grosse Pointe Foundation for Public Education (GPFPE) is a nonprofit organization that provides private funding for academic and enrichment programs for the Grosse Pointe Public School System. It partners with the community to ensure students have access to in-person and virtual education that meets the standards of the district. GPFPE provides schools with grants that assist students with special needs, reading comprehension, advanced journalism classes, and more. The organization also provides educators the ability to apply for grants. The schools receive funding from Lansing instead of directly from local taxes. Currently, the GPPSS’s funding from the state is equal to the amount generated in 1994, due in part to the passage of the “hold harmless” millage. Without that millage, the district would receive fewer funds than the 1994 level. The district has not had an increase in funds in more than a decade.
