Friends of the Rouge is a nonprofit organization founded in 1986 to raise awareness about the need to clean up the Rouge River in southeast Michigan. Its mission is to restore, protect, and enhance the Rouge River watershed through stewardship, education, and collaboration thereby improving the lives of the community through its interaction with the river. FOTR’s focus is on enhancing, monitoring, and conserving the ecological health of the watershed for the benefit of all members of the community and future generations. The organization’s first project, which continues today as an annual spring event, is the Rouge Rescue river clean-up. Other projects include River Restoration, the Rouge Education Project, and the Rouge River Water Trail.
