The Rectory, a new pizza spot in Detroit, will have its grand opening on Sept. 30 at 1920 Atkinson Street in the Atkinson Street Historic District, which is just south of the Boston-Edison neighborhood.
The Rectory, which is open, is a full-service pizza restaurant located in a restored historic home that once served as the rectory for the church next door, now home to The Congregation, a café and bar that opened in 2020.
The building, which originally was a rectory for St. James A.M.E. Church that was built in 1929, had been vacant for more than 50 years before being reimagined as a new culinary and social space. The restoration included historic windows, handcrafted furnishings, and unique stained-glass windows.
Guests can enjoy indoor dining, a three-season back deck, and a walk-up window for carryout orders. The space is available for private events, as well.
Pizza highlights Include:
– Hand-tossed signature pies using locally sourced ingredients
– House-made red sauce, white sauce, and pesto bases
– Customizable build-your-own options
– Vegan and gluten-free alternatives
– Fresh salads, appetizers, and curated beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic)
“Bringing this building back to life felt like the natural next step,” says Betsy Murdoch, co-founder of The Congregation, which includes shared greenspace. “We kept hearing from our neighbors that they wanted more food options nearby, more places that felt like an extension of home. The Rectory is just that.”
Murdoch and her partners — Antonio Luck, Mark Mondary, and Amy Peterson, all residents of Boston-Edison — see The Rectory as an extension of their mission to reinvest in the community they call home.
The Rectory hours of operation are Mon.–Thurs.: 4–10 p.m.; Fri.– Sat.: noon-11 p.m.; and Sunday: noon–9 p.m.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin on Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m., followed by music from DJ Radical Me and an evening of food, drinks, and community celebration.
