Sterling Heights-based pipe and valve distributor The Macomb Group Inc. has acquired Smith Metal and Supply Inc., a similar company in South Carolina. Smith Metal does business as Richburg Supply Co. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Since our expansion into North Carolina in 2016, and subsequent opening of a new 80,000-square-foot distribution center in Charlotte last January, we’ve been focused on establishing operations in South Carolina,” says Bill McGivern, CEO of The Macomb Group. “Richburg Supply provided a unique opportunity to not only access attractive new customers in South Carolina, but also to enhance the strength of our team in the southeast.”

The Macomb Group was founded in 1977 and has 18 service branches in seven states including Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

It serves the automotive industry, the food and beverage market, general manufacturing, hospitals, schools and universities, pharmaceuticals, utilities, power plants, steel, pulp and paper, refineries, and general industry.

“Our reputation with some of the customers we share in common is what initially prompted the call from The Macomb Group,” says J.T. Smith, president and owner of Richburg Supply Co. “After several meetings, it was evident that they could provide the resources to accelerate the growth of Richburg Supply and in the process provide new growth opportunities for my employees.”
