Rivian, an electric truck manufacturer that operates an R&D center in Plymouth Township, has delivered the first of its R1T production vehicles, many to its employees through an employee purchase program.

The program was implemented, according to the company, to provide it with an opportunity to internally test the entire customer experience, including transaction, financing, and insurance as well as overall vehicle quality.

With several hundred employees as early customers, Rivian says it was able to identify and address a wide range of enhancements to its software stack through over-the-air transmissions.

Rivian also has been making deliveries to non-Rivian employees, which is expected to continue to increase week over week.

As of Dec. 15, Rivian had approximately 71,000 preorders for the R1T and R1S in the U.S. and Canada, with the large majority having configured an Adventure Package with a large pack battery. In order to serve the largest number of preorder holders, Rivian says it will be prioritizing building the Adventure Package with Large pack battery during the next year.

Explore Package preorders and vehicles with a Max pack battery configuration will follow in 2023. In setting its delivery timing, Rivian optimized its build sequence around the build combination that would support ramping as quickly as possible and therefore have the largest possible positive climate impact.

“In early 2022 we are introducing a new feature on owners Rivian Account Page that will display their current delivery timing estimate,” the automaker said in a statement. “The information will be tailored specifically to them and the exact vehicle they configured. Our goal is to give owners accurate, up-to-date details about their specific preorder so they can better plan and stay more informed.”

Also in 2022, Rivian will be expanding its service footprint, customer drive program, Rivian Adventure Network and Waypoints charging sites, Rivian Spaces, its membership program, and adding new Adventure Gear to its Gear Shop.
