The Museum of Illusions Detroit has opened in the central business district at 1545 Woodward Ave. in the Himelhoch’s Building, located just south of the Hotel David Whitney and Grand Circus Park.
The attraction is the latest addition to the global Museum of Illusions family, the world’s largest and fastest-growing chain of privately owned museums, welcoming visitors in 28 countries to over 60 locations worldwide, according to officials.
Spanning more than 9,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, 3-D holograms, optical illusions, and immersive installations, the Museum of Illusions Detroit offers an experience for families. Each illusion is designed to challenge the senses, spark curiosity, and offer photo moments.
The museum is a celebration of Detroit’s innovation, artistry, and cultural soul, and features exclusive, locally inspired exhibits unique to the area, including:
- The Reversed Room — Classic Car Garage: A nod to Detroit’s legendary automotive legacy, this illusion flips the Motor City on its head. Guests can explore an upside-down garage complete with spare tires, toolboxes, and retro signage, a nostalgic homage to the city that puts the world on wheels.
- The Building Illusion — Inspired by one of Detroit’s iconic theaters, this illusion recreates an Art Deco façade and neon marquee, transforming a cornerstone of Detroit’s music history into an immersive visual experience.
- Following Eyes — Paying tribute to Detroit’s deep musical roots and global influence, this exhibit celebrates the spirit of Motown — where rhythm, movement, and illusion meet.
“We are thrilled to bring the Museum of Illusions experience to Detroit, a city that thrives on creativity, resilience, and reinvention,” said Kim Schaefer, CEO of Museum of Illusions. “From cars to culture, Detroit is fueled by innovation, and our museum is the perfect fit for a place where imagination reshapes reality.”
Guests can expect to explore more than 80 exhibits designed to teach visitors about vision, perception, and the science behind illusions.
The museum is open Sunday thru Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with final admission one hour before closing.
Tickets are currently on sale at MOIDetroit.com. In addition to general admission, the museum offers packages for group outings, field trips, team-building events, and private celebrations, all of which can be pre-booked online.
