The Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation (DPSCD) received a $1 million investment from the Joel Landy Foundation, the Torgow family, and the Sterling Group to improve the automotive education program at the Breithaupt Career and Technical Center.
“This generous gift strengthens our ability to prepare students for high-demand careers in the automotive industry,” says Kerrie Mitchell, president and CEO of the DPSCD Foundation. “By aligning with DPSCD’s commitment to workforce readiness, the Joel Landy Foundation is creating opportunities for students to gain critical skills and credentials that lead directly to employment.”
In addition to upgrading the facilities and equipment at the Joel Landy Automotive Training Lab, the funding also will support teacher retention and expand enrollment in Breithaupt’s automotive programs. The program serves 80-100 students in grades 10-12 annually. It offers training in collision repair and automotive services technology, with students earning Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
The new Joel Landy Automotive Work-Based Learning Program connects students with local dealerships for paid internships, ensuring real-world experience that bridges classroom learning and workforce demands.
The lab is named in honor of Detroit developer Joel Landy who died in 2020. Landy was a supporter of Detroit students and the automotive industry. He ventured into real estate after his car repair business, J&L Custom Auto Works Inc., became successful. Landy is credited with renovating many historic buildings in Midtown Detroit.
“Joel Landy’s vision and passion for Detroit were truly unmatched,” says Bob Baldori, board member of the Joel Landy Foundation. “His lifelong connection to the automotive industry and belief in the power of opportunity make this gift to Breithaupt Career and Technical Center a powerful way to honor his legacy. This gift will inspire and equip the next generation of automotive professionals, continuing Joel’s work of building opportunities for Detroit’s future.”
The DPSCD Foundation acts as the district’s philanthropic arm, helping the group with its plans to provide students with career-focused education and work-based learning opportunities.
