Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) in Traverse City drew a record number of passengers in 2025 — marking the busiest year in the airport’s history. The airport at its current location opened in 1936.
Final totals show TVC served 935,816 passengers last year, a 19 percent increase over the previous record of 787,114 passengers.
The record-setting year reflects TVC’s role as a vital gateway for northern Michigan, serving local residents while welcoming visitors from across the country and around the world.
In 2025, the airport was served by seven airlines, offering 20 nonstop destinations. In addition to serving local residents, the airport draws visitors looking to experience world-class golf courses, four season resorts, wineries, breweries, culinary offerings, and recreation.
Momentum is expected to continue into 2026, with passenger growth projected alongside major infrastructure improvements.
This spring, TVC is expected to break ground on its “Gates to the Future” terminal expansion project. The $120-million project will add five new gates, expanded hold rooms, an enhanced security checkpoint, and other passenger-focused upgrades.
Construction is anticipated to begin in April, with project completion expected in 2028.
The scope of the proposed project will include:
- Holdroom addition: Another concourse for seating for four gates and eventually up to five new gates along with support amenities. At the end of the program, TVC will provide services from Concourse A (Existing) and Concourse B (New).
- Connector walkway: There will be a corridor connecting Concourse A and B.
- Apron: Pavement will be added to accommodate aircraft access to Concourse B.
- Security checkpoint upgrade: The checkpoint will be relocated and space provided for up to five security check-in lanes.
- Exit Lanes: Eventually, in lieu of a TSA-staffed exit lane, new technology will be installed for passengers going to baggage claim.
- New gate departures’ lounge.
- New concessions area.
- Restrooms, mother’s room, sensory room, service animal relief area, and senior changing table.
- Additional passenger amenities: seat-side charging, business cubicles, airside public lounge, etc.
- Passenger boarding bridges.
