Whitaker Group to Open $5.5M Social Status Detroit Cultural Hub Thursday

The Whitaker Group, a community-led retail, experiential, and creative company based in North Carolina, is opening its Social Status Detroit, a new space that marks the brand’s debut in the Motor City, on April 24.

Situated at 9101 E. Jefferson Ave. on the city’s east side, the project reimagines a 100-year-old, 1,750-square-foot commercial building into a $5.5 million cultural hub — combining retail, community, and art in a way that honors Detroit’s legacy while investing in its vibrant future, according to The Whitaker Group.

The development, located a few blocks west of Pewabic Pottery, features four distinct retail concepts, a take-out restaurant, and a central courtyard complete with a basketball half-court designed for neighborhood events. A mural by artist Nina Chanel Abney anchors the space, paying tribute to Detroit’s creative spirit.

“Detroit has always been a city of creativity, culture, and strength,” says James Whitner, founder of The Whitaker Group. “It deserves spaces that reflect that energy and put back into the community.

“With Social Status Detroit, we’re not just opening a store, we’re creating a platform for connection, expression, and opportunity in a neighborhood that’s been undervalued for far too long. This is about honoring the past while building for the future.”

Social Status Detroit is part of The Whitaker Group’s ongoing more than $51 million commitment to reinvesting in historically Black neighborhoods, with a footprint in cities like Harlem, Charlotte, N.C.; and Atlanta. This new location is designed to serve as a cultural landmark and community hub in one of Detroit’s most historic areas.

The multi-use space will debut with an evening event featuring DJ Sky Jetta, visuals by Detroit photographer James Johnson and cinematographer DP Gene, catering from Wonkoos Food Factory, and champagne poured by St. Julian Winery.

In Related News:  Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan recently joined community developer MiSide Community Impact Network, along with state and local leaders, to celebrate the grand opening of the Campbell Street Apartments, a new affordable housing development located at 5800 Michigan Ave., just east of Livernois Avenue.

The development provides the East Chadsey-Condon neighborhood with 40 units of affordable housing in its first phase of construction.

The new mixed-use development will offer a range of one- to three-bedroom units. All apartments are reserved for households not earning more than 30 percent of the area median income. Due to project-based housing vouchers from MSHDA, however, no resident will have to pay more than 30 percent of their income on rent.

A second project with 32 units called Wesson Apartments will complement the redevelopment of the entire 5800 Michigan Ave. block. Wesson Avenue Apartments will be a four-story mixed-use building consisting of 45,000 square feet and is expected to open in about 19 months.

“The expansion of affordable housing is incredible,” says Melia Howard, deputy mayor for the city of Detroit. “We continue to gain safe, affordable housing to retain our Detroiters and bring new ones in. I’m so grateful to be a part of the housing solution in our city and to see it flourish.”

The Detroit Housing and Revitalization Department’s Detroit Home Connect offers a central website for residents to explore affordable housing options across the city.
