A second hotel that will be connected to Huntington Place in downtown Detroit was announced Wednesday by the Detroit Regional Convention and Facility Authority (DRCFA) and Detroit-based developer Congress & Associates, an affiliate of the Sterling Group real estate firm.

The yet-to-be-named $450 million hotel comes on the heels of the 600-room JW Marriott Detroit Water Square hotel project, which is currently under construction on the former Joe Louis Arena site immediately west of Huntington Place.

The JW Marriott will be open in time for the 2027 NCAA Final Four being played at Ford Field, and may be completed as soon as December.

The new unnamed hotel is expected to add approximately 600 rooms to the city’s inventory and be located immediately north of Huntington Place in an area that spans portions of the block bounded by Congress, Fort, and Cass streets, along with Washington Boulevard.

Officials say the project will create more than 600 union construction jobs, 1,000 new permanent hospitality positions, and generate $100 million in annual spending.

“This is another milestone moment for hotel development in Detroit and puts Huntington Place in a prime position to secure even more industry-leading meetings, conventions, and large-scale events,” says Claude Molinari, chairman of the board of DRCFA and president of Visit Detroit. “We’re appreciative to once again collaborate with the team at the Sterling Group to develop a connected property that will be a differentiator for the region.”

Construction on the hotel is slated to begin sometime in early 2027.

The hotel project is joint venture with 51 percent ownership by the developer and possibly a selected hotel brand, and 49 percent ownership by DRCFA. This arrangement is expected to create “significant revenue and maximize taxpayer dollars” over the course of the 30-year timeframe, officials say.

The project reportedly has support from the State of Michigan; County Executives Warren Evans, Dave Coulter, and Mark Hackel, and their representatives; and Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield.

“As one of the largest convention centers in the country, Huntington Place continues to evolve and transform its footprint, the surrounding area, and the entire region with thoughtful and community driven expansion that will boost economic impact and improve our region for years to come,” says Bryan Crowe, CEO of the DRCFA.
