Detroit’s Fisher Building is undergoing an extensive preservation initiative, which includes restoration of brass and glass décor at two entrances and exterior marble façades on the south and west sides of the structure.

The restoration of the 98-year-old building is scheduled to be completed later this year. The work was made possible by a $5 million Community Enhancement Grant from the State of Michigan.

“The state’s investment in the Fisher Building enables a timely, careful preservation of its south and west entrances and external marble facades,” says retired architect Robert Sharrow, who has been leading the Albert Kahn Legacy Foundation’s involvement in the initiative. “A highly skilled team of specialized and experienced preservationists used original materials, finishes, and artistic presentation to restore the structure’s original elegance.”

The Michigan State University Endowment Fund owns the Fisher Building, built in 1928 by the seven Fisher brothers, who were key suppliers to General Motors Co. At the time, the building cost $3 million (roughly $58.8 million today), and was completed in 15 months.

As grant recipient and financial fiduciary, the Detroit-based Albert Kahn Legacy Foundation has managed budget and expenditures, processed contractor payments, and monitored project performance for the preservation initiative.

Over the years, the 28-story tower, hand‑painted arcade ceiling, marble corridors, and bronze detailing have undergone multiple rounds of preservation to conserve their extraordinary craftsmanship.

Established in 2020, the Albert Kahn Legacy Foundation is dedicated to telling the story of the inspiring life and landmark architectural vision of Albert Kahn.

Through recognition, appreciation, advocacy, and education, the foundation strives to preserve Kahn’s ideas and encourage innovation in architectural and engineering design. For more information, visit albertkahnlegacy.org.
