Following a multi-million-dollar historic restoration, Bedrock has opened The Belle in downtown Detroit. It offers 42 apartments along with a two-level retail or restaurant space. Bedrock is owned by Dan Gilbert, founder and chairman of Rocket Cos.
Located at 1346 Broadway St. (at the southeast corner of E. Grand River Avenue near Detroit Opera), The Belle, a 100-year-old Beaux-Arts style building, had been largely vacant before Bedrock acquired it.
Restored by architect Kraemer Design Group with interiors by Pophouse, both located in Detroit, The Belle offers apartment suites ranging from studios to two bedrooms. Design finishes include dark quartz countertops, emerald-green cabinetry, pendant lighting, stainless steel appliances, and more.
Residents will have access to amenities that include a community lounge with a kitchenette and private office space, bike storage, a package room, and a secure lobby.
Originally built in 1926 as the Broadway Exchange Building, The Belle was commissioned by Mrs. Clara Scherer, a pioneering businesswoman who sought to fill demand for office space. It was designed by George Mason, the architect of the Detroit Masonic Temple, Detroit Yacht Club, and Belle Isle Aquarium.
Exterior restoration details include the re-installation of the original Rosso Levanto marble on the first and second floors, and the refurbishment of terra cotta details including cornucopias, field flowers, and farmer baskets — a nod to the Americana influence and style of the building.
Inside, an original plaster ceiling was uncovered and restored in the lobby before being hand painted in the original 1920s color palette, featuring yellows, greens, and reds. Marble wainscoting was repaired and replaced, where necessary, with original terrazzo floors throughout the ground floor.
A 7,500-square-foot, two-level Broadway-facing space with original features is available for a food and beverage or a retail operator.
Now available for lease, resident move-ins at The Belle will begin on July 1.
