Three physicians have been named to Beaumont Health’s board of directors to add more representation from doctors. With the new appointments, the 16-person board will grow to 19 directors. Six of the board members are physicians.
“We made a commitment earlier this year to increase physician representation on our board,” says John Lewis, chairman of the board. “Many physicians were nominated, and we went through a comprehensive review process that ultimately led us to select these three esteemed physicians. All of our board members volunteer their time and talent to support Beaumont in advancing our efforts to provide compassionate, extraordinary care every day to the communities we serve.”
The new board members are:
Dr. Abed Asfour, the chief of staff at Beaumont Hospital, Trenton, as well as cardiology section chief and director of interventional cardiology. He is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Wayne State University.
Dr. Ashok B. Jain, the chief medical officer at Beaumont Hospital, Wayne. He has experience in medical leadership roles and has served on other boards.
Dr. Robert Welsh, a physician executive for surgical specialty with the Beaumont Medical Group. He is a thoracic surgeon and an associate professor at the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.
The board has governing authority and is responsible for operating the organization. The health system’s governance structure includes 10 board committees.
Beaumont has eight hospitals with 3,429 beds, 145 outpatient sites, and nearly 5,000 physicians, 38,000 employees, and 3,500 volunteers.
