Amazon Pharmacy on Tuesday unveiled its first Michigan same-day delivery fulfillment center in Wixom that serves metro Detroit. The center is part of the company’s mission to make medications more accessible in a faster way to customers nationwide.
The Amazon Pharmacy and same-day delivery fulfillment site in Wixom is close to 300,000 square feet in size and employs almost 600 full-time employees.
The state-of-the-art facility is staffed by trained and licensed pharmacists available 24/7 to speak with customers about their medications. It features advanced automation technology for fast filling of prescriptions and temperature-controlled storage to ensure safe medication delivery.
“We’re excited that customers in Wixom, Detroit, and surrounding areas can now receive most of their medications conveniently within hours,” says Kelvin Downes, director of operations for Amazon Pharmacy.
“This Wixom facility, with its advanced automation and 24/7 pharmacist support, addresses the growing challenge of pharmacy deserts in the region. By combining speed, convenience, and transparent pricing, we aim to improve health outcomes for Michigan residents and beyond.”
Recent retail pharmacy closures by Rite Aid, CVS, and Walgreens have left many communities with limited access to convenient, reliable, and fast prescription delivery services.
A study by J.D. Power in Troy, also released Tuesday, states that these closures are opening the door to companies like Amazon to step in and fill the void.
“Chain drug store customers are significantly more likely than supermarket or mass market merchandiser pharmacy customers to say they ‘definitely will’ or ‘probably will’ switch pharmacies in the next 12 months,” says Christopher Lis, managing director of global health care intelligence at J.D. Power. “That openness to switching, combined with steadily increasing satisfaction scores at mail order pharmacies, helps set the stage for a tipping point in the pharmacy space.”
According to the study, chain drug stores are losing ground to ground to mail order pharmacies. The average overall satisfaction score for chain drug stores is 643, which is up one point from the 2024 study.
Despite the incremental improvement, satisfaction scores for chain drug stores are 54 points lower than the average satisfaction score for mail order pharmacies (697), 63 points lower than mass market merchandisers (706) and 72 points lower than supermarkets (715). Mail order pharmacies show the largest year-over-year gains in satisfaction, rising seven points to 697 in 2025.
The new Amazon Pharmacy in Wixom, as well as other sites around the country, are poised to capitalize on the opportunity.
Amazon Pharmacy says it’s committed to providing same-day medication delivery to nearly half of U.S. customers by the end of 2025. It accepts most insurance plans and offers multiple savings options for customers, including:
- Automatic manufacturer coupons: Applied at checkout, saving customers money on eligible medications
- Prime Rx: Saves Prime members up to 80 percent on generic and 40 percent on brand-name medications
- RxPass: Access to common generic medications for a $5 monthly subscription fee
- PillPack: Sorts multiple medications by date and time and ideal for managing multiple prescriptions. It allows caregivers to manage medications for their loved ones using PillPak or on Amazon Pharmacy
