Time magazine has selected Detroit to be part of its third annual list of the World’s Greatest Places that highlights 50 noteworthy worldwide travel destinations.

The list was compiled by Time’s international network of correspondents and contributors, with an eye toward places offering new and exciting experiences. The magazine focuses on Detroit’s rapid recovery, the story of its resilient people, along with a heritage of design, innovation, and diversity.

“Nearly 10 years after Detroit filed for bankruptcy, travelers can now play a role in the city’s vibrant economic recovery by simply driving through,” the magazine reads. “Detroit was recently selected as home of the USA’s first electric-vehicle charging road, solidifying its title once again as the Motor City — but for the modern age.”

Among the world’s great places sharing the stage with Detroit are Seoul, South Korea; Queenstown, New Zealand; Bali, Indonesia; Miami; San Francisco; Calabria, Italy; Copenhagen, Denmark; and the International Space Station.

“Visitors come to Detroit to experience our world-changing music scene, the heartbeat of American innovation, and vibrant culinary possibilities, but they fall in love with the people and the stories of our region,” says Claude Molinari, president and CEO of Visit Detroit. “Visit Detroit proudly embraces our role in attracting millions of visitors every year, and now that Time has named Detroit one of the World’s Greatest Places, we look forward to welcoming even more.”

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says: “It’s gratifying that Time has recognized what Detroiters always have known: that Detroit is a great city with an extraordinary history. We still have work to do, but Detroit is in the midst of a real rebirth — one that many had thought was impossible just a few years ago.”

“Eighty percent of this roughly four-square-mile island on Lake Huron is protected as a state park,” writes reporter Rebecca Ascher-Walsh. “The family-friendly downtown has many restaurants, fudge shops, and galleries. There are also several golf courses, one of which, known as Wawa, lies on a battlefield where the British captured the island from the Americans in the War of 1812.”

People can explore the island by foot, bike, or horse-drawn carriage, but no cars are allowed. Accommodations include the Grand Hotel, which dates back to 1887 and earned the No. 6 spot on this year’s list of the Best Hotels in the Midwest.
