Troy-based ASE’s new 2023 Workplace Flexibility Survey shows 82 percent of Michigan businesses participating in the study are offering flexible work arrangements that include the choice of remote work.
“The pandemic has clearly changed the mindset and expectations around where work gets done,” says Mary E. Corrado, president and CEO of ASE. “Employers are still navigating how to address employee expectations and all the challenges and opportunities that come with remote work.”
Highlights of the ASE 2023 Workplace Flexibility Survey include:
- 145 out of the 177 companies surveyed (82 percent) offer the opportunity for remote work, 106 offer flexible hours, 103 offer non-mandated personal leaves of absence, and 42 offer paid parental leave.
- Of the companies that offer remote work, 42 percent allow at least two days per week and 28 percent provide at least three days per week, when mandated by organizational leadership. Approximately 32 percent of companies have varying requirements for the number of days of in-person work when mandated by the manager.
- When it comes to eligibility for remote work, companies reported that the following groups are eligible: executive/senior management, managerial/supervisory, professional, and administrative/technician.
- Regarding the costs that companies cover for remote workers, 87 percent supply a laptop/computer, 46 percent cover office supplies, and 28 percent cover printer/ink. It is uncommon for expenses such as internet service and office furniture, to be covered, either fully or partially.
A total of 177 organizations from across Michigan participated in the survey. Organizations with 1-100 employees made up approximately 44 percent of the survey sample, while organizations with between 101-500 employees represented nearly 41 percent of the sample.
The remaining 15 percent of the sample came from organizations with more than 500 employees. A variety of industries are represented in the survey, with durable goods manufacturing representing the largest percentage at 42.9 percent. Trades and services were the second-largest industry representation at 22.6 percent.
