When the new Smith & Co. restaurant opens at 644 Selden St. in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood in September, it will feature a menu offering locally sourced ingredients and craft beer from Nain Rouge Brewery along with hard-to-find selections from other small Michigan brewers.
Nain Rouge Brewery will open in the coming months adjacent to the restaurant with a shared patio and will be sold exclusively at Smith & Co. In the interim, beer will be provided by local breweries. The new eatery is located near Selden Standard and Honest John’s.
The building itself harkens back to Detroit’s past. Built in 1917, it originally was home to Smith Welding Supply & Equipment Co. for 90 years. Volume One Design Studio, which has an office in Detroit, led the redesign and utilized a mix of urban elements including components of the original building.
The 7,000-square-foot facility is a combination of wood, metals, brick, and concrete. With seating for up to approximately 160 in the dining area, it can accommodate large parties. A concrete bar seats 19 for drinks and full-service dining, with a surrounding lounge serving bar snacks and the beverage menu. Full-service dining will be available on the patio, which will share a courtyard with the brewery and another business, Barcade.
Smith & Co is being developed by owners Jon Carlson, Greg Lobdell, and Chet Czaplicka. The restaurant’s daily operations will be handled by general manager Dave Mammal and executive chef Greg Antioho.
As the new establishment ramps up its operations, it is seeking experienced restaurant workers for both front- and back-of-house positions. Managers hope to add 75 jobs to the Detroit economy. Once open, Smith & Co.’s hours will be Monday-Thursday, 4-11 p.m.; Friday, 4 p.m.-midnight; Saturday, 11 a.m.-midnight; and Sunday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
