Michigan Legacy Credit Union in Wyandotte has completed the renovation of its branch in Pontiac, the last of five total branches to be updated.
Designed as an old school diner, the new space incorporates nostalgia along with technology like video tellers and other advances. Overall, the credit union has 22,250-plus members.
“The Pontiac branch serves many members who are currently working with or retired from the City of Pontiac, including Pontiac’s public safety personnel, with a headquarters adjacent to the branch,” says Carma Peters, president and CEO of MLCU. “It’s a busy branch with lots of familiar faces and long-term members who have commented on how much they enjoy the colorful, open-space design.”
The Pontiac bank branch spans 2,950 square feet of space. MCLU owns the entire building at 144 E. Pike St., which is 9,600 square feet. The credit union is currently seeking to lease out the remaining space.
The Warren branch was the first of the branch renovation projects, and was completed in 2019. The Highland branch, a former schoolhouse located in the historic district of downtown Highland, was completed in 2024.
“The Highland branch is 3,900 square feet and was subject to the design standards of the historical commission so there were a few more hoops to run through,” Peters says. “Interestingly, despite the consistent design theme, every branch has its own culture and personality, driven by members and also the location, whether it’s an historic district like Highland, a big urban location like Pontiac, or tucked into a neighborhood like our Wyandotte headquarters branch.”
All five branch renovations were completed by Thompson Phelan Group in St. Clair County, which includes multiple credit unions and financial institutions in its client portfolio.
Michigan Legacy Credit Union is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative serving members who live, work, worship, attend school, or own a business in the state of Michigan.
