Kroger has broken ground for new store builds in Dearborn and Commerce Township. Together, the two projects represent a combined investment of more than $70 million and are expected to create nearly 350 jobs in metro Detroit.

The new Dearborn store, located at the southwest corner of Ford Road and Mercury Drive (200 Shehadi Court), represents an investment of approximately $35.5 million.

The 122,983-square-foot store will include a full-service Deli/Bakery, Seafood and smart-service Meat department, a sushi counter, and a pharmacy with drive-thru. The new store is expected to create 200 jobs with a proposed opening date of June 2027.

The new Commerce Township store, located at the southwest corner of Springvale Drive and Haggerty Road (165 Haggerty Rd.), will expand Kroger’s offerings in the local community and represents an investment of approximately $34.5 million for the store, plus $3.5 million for an accompanying fuel center.

The 103,000-square-foot store will feature a Murray’s Cheese shop, full-service Deli/Bakery and Seafood, smart-service Meat, and a pharmacy with drive-thru. The new store is expected to create 150 jobs with a proposed opening date of May 2027.

“We’re thrilled to bring two brand-new locations to our Kroger shoppers in Dearborn and Commerce Township,” says Troy Harding, president at Kroger’s Michigan Division, which has 15,000 associates in the state.

“These stores represent our deep commitment to bring fresh, affordable groceries to residents and families across Michigan. We can’t wait for everyone these new stores next year.”

Both stores will replace older locations with modern, state-of-the-art buildings that offer expanded fresh departments, pharmacy access, and convenient pickup service.

In Related News, Grand Rapids-based Meijer has announced it will open its new supercenter in Plymouth Township on Sept. 30, increasing the retailer’s store count in Michigan to 130. The new 159,000-square-foot supercenter is located at 48025 Five Mile Road (west of Beck Road).

The store will feature a wide assortment of fresh produce and grocery staples, including bakery, meat, seafood, and deli departments, a floral area, garden center, apparel, and home goods sections.

In addition, Meijer opened a new 75,000-square-foot grocery format store on Aug. 19 at 33500 Seven Mile Road, at Farmington Road, in Livonia.

The new location will bring a streamlined shopping experience to the area, offering convenient access to groceries. This will be the fourth Meijer Grocery store in Michigan, complementing the retailer’s 125 supercenters and market format stores across the state.

In May, the retailer opened a smaller, 47,000-square-foot Meijer Grocery in Rochester Hills.
