Warren-based furniture giant Gardner White, which in February announced plans to open a GW Home-branded store on Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit, has set June 6 at 10 a.m. for the outlet’s opening.
The store is located at 1201 Woodward Ave., directly across from Hudson’s Detroit, Bedrock’s nearly completed 48-story hotel and residential tower and a 12-story office building, four floors of which will be the new headquarters of General Motors Co.
GW Home is a new brand concept for the 112-year-old furniture and mattress retailer. According to the company, the store will feature local artist collaborations and brand partnerships that will offer “a curated shopping experience of stylish furniture, home decor, art, and accessories.”
“GW HOME is more than a furniture store, it’s an experience where design and local artistry come together to create homes that are as unique as the people who live in them,” says Rachel Stewart, CEO of Gardner White and GW Home.
The new store will occupy three stories totaling approximately 15,000 square feet — street level and the story above, along with a lower level. GW Home marks Gardner White’s 14th store location in Michigan and Gardner White’s return to downtown Detroit.
The historic building, originally built in 1917, was the second home of S.S. Kresge Co., the five-and-dime store chain established by Sebastian S. Kresge in 1899. Today, Bedrock, which acquired the nine-story structure in 2012, has fully renovated the building. The upper floors are home to GSTV and UBS Financial Services.
A fourth-generation, family owned and operated company, Gardner White opened its first store location on Fort Steet in 1912.
GW Home is expected to showcase premium brands, including Bernhardt, Rowe, Vanguard, Drew & Jonathan Home, Tempur-Pedic, Aireloom, Kingsdown, and locally manufactured Serta, as well as a collection of furnishings and locally sourced pieces.
